About this work

Overview

Created in 1498, this tempera painting on poplar panel presents a quiet devotional scene of the Holy Family accompanied by the infant Saint John the Baptist. The composition is enclosed by an elaborate gold border that frames the figures and a modest landscape, emphasizing the intimate interaction among the central characters.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre, the Virgin Mary kneels in a blue mantle, cradling the infant Christ, while a second woman holds the young John, whose gaze meets the viewer. An older male figure, identified as Joseph, sits nearby, his posture reflective. The arrangement underscores themes of familial tenderness and the prophetic link between Christ and his forerunner.

Technique & Style

Executed on a poplar wood support, the work employs the chiaroscuro modeling typical of the High Renaissance, using subtle shifts of light and shadow to give volume to the figures. The rich blues and reds contrast sharply with the gilded frame, while delicate brushwork renders the textures of fabric and flesh with restrained realism.

History & Provenance

The panel was painted by Fra Bartolomeo, a Florentine artist who had studied with Cosimo Rosselli before entering the Dominican order in 1500; this piece therefore predates his monastic vows. It entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s Renaissance holdings.

Context

Produced during the High Renaissance, the painting reflects the period’s focus on balanced composition and humanistic portrayal of sacred subjects. Fra Bartolomeo’s training under Rosselli is evident in the clear spatial organization, while the inclusion of Saint John anticipates the later emphasis on his role in the narrative of salvation.
