Subject & Meaning
The painting illustrates the moment the three wise men, traditionally named Balthazar and Caspar, offer their tributes to the infant Jesus. A central, serene Madonna in a blue gown holds the calm Christ Child, surrounded by a bustling crowd. Kneeling figures in elaborate attire present their gifts, while dogs rest nearby. Angels emerge from dark clouds illuminated by a divine glow, emphasizing the sacred significance of the event.
Technique & Style
Fontebasso employs a dynamic composition, drawing the viewer's eye to the central group through a strategic arrangement of figures. The artist utilizes strong contrasts of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, to define forms and heighten the dramatic impact of the scene. This interplay of illumination and darkness helps to distinguish individual figures within the crowded tableau, creating a sense of depth and emotional intensity typical of the Venetian Rococo style.
History & Provenance
Trained by Sebastiano Ricci and influenced by the prominent Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Fontebasso developed a distinctive style within the Venetian school. While primarily active in his native Venice, his reputation extended beyond Italy. Later in his career, in 1761, he received a significant commission to contribute ceiling paintings and decorative elements to the opulent Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, demonstrating his international recognition.
