Guardi employs a fluid brushwork that departs from the precise linearity of his early influences, favoring softer edges and atmospheric effects. Light is modulated across the water and façades, creating depth through subtle chiaroscuro, while the delicate handling of sky and water conveys a sense of fleeting, luminous weather.

After the death of his brother in 1760, Guardi turned increasingly toward vedute, producing this view as part of his later output. The painting entered the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it remains a representative example of Guardi’s mature cityscape style within the museum’s European paintings department.

Created during the waning years of the Venetian Republic, the painting reflects a period when artists like Guardi documented the city’s iconic vistas for both local patrons and the Grand Tour market. The composition aligns with the tradition of Venetian vedutisti, yet its looser execution signals a shift toward a more expressive visual language.
