Executed with soft, rounded modeling, the figures are rendered in warm, luminous tones that suggest a subtle artificial lighting, a hallmark of van Honthorst’s approach. The brushwork is delicate, allowing the varied colors of the blossoms to stand out against the smooth flesh tones of the putti.

Gerard van Honthorst, a leading member of the Utrecht school, produced the painting after his Roman period, during which he earned the nickname Gherardo delle Notti for his nocturnal effects. The canvas entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings in the 20th century, where it remains on display.

Van Honthorst trained under Carel van Mander and worked alongside contemporaries such as Hendrick ter Brugghen and Dirck van Baburen. His oeuvre includes both portraiture and genre scenes, and this work reflects the influence of Italian Baroque motifs filtered through a Dutch sensibility.
