Executed in oil, the painting employs chiaroscuro to model the sitter’s features, creating a three‑dimensional effect through contrasts of light and shadow. The ruff is rendered with meticulous attention to its folds, while the dark background recedes, allowing the facial expression and textile details to dominate the visual field.

Gertruida van Veen, an Antwerp native, completed the work during the height of the Baroque period. The portrait later entered the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, where it remains on display. Gertruida herself was later commemorated in an engraved portrait by Lucas Vorsterman, indicating her recognized status among contemporary artists.

Otto van Veen was a noted teacher and mentor to several artists, including Peter Paul Rubens, situating him within a network of significant Baroque creators. The painting reflects the era’s emphasis on realistic representation and the personal bonds between artist families, illustrating how artistic skill and lineage were often intertwined in the Southern Netherlands.
