Saint Jerome Reading in the Desert

The composition centers on the biblical scholar Saint Jerome, shown seated amid a barren desert while engaged in reading. The setting underscores the saint’s reputation for asceticism and scholarly devotion, reflecting the Renaissance interest in portraying holy figures in contemplative, naturalistic environments that emphasize both intellectual and spiritual pursuits.

Bellini employs oil pigments on a wooden panel, allowing for subtle gradations of tone and a luminous surface.
