About this work

Overview

Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo’s oil painting titled “Tobias and the Angel,” executed around 1527, portrays a tranquil outdoor encounter between a kneeling youth and a celestial messenger. The composition is set against a softly lit sky dotted with trees, creating a calm atmosphere that emphasizes the gentle interaction between the two figures.

Subject & Meaning

The work illustrates the biblical episode in which the archangel Raphael guides the young Tobias on his journey. The angel, rendered in luminous white garments and expansive wings, extends a hand toward the kneeling boy, who is dressed in bright orange and red tones, suggesting guidance, protection, and the transmission of divine wisdom.

Technique & Style

Savoldo employs a refined oil technique, using delicate glazing to achieve a luminous quality in the angel’s robes and the surrounding sky. The contrast between the warm, saturated colors of the human figure and the cool, airy palette of the background demonstrates the artist’s skill in balancing chiaroscuro with atmospheric perspective.

History & Provenance

The canvas entered Rome’s Galleria Borghese in 1910, where it was displayed in the Sala dell’Aurora. Its attribution was corrected by the museum’s director, Giulio Cantalamessa, who identified the work as Savoldo’s after seeing it in a private residence in Tivoli, where it had previously been misidentified as a Titian.

Context

Created during the early sixteenth century, the painting reflects the period’s interest in biblical narratives rendered with human emotion and naturalistic settings. Savoldo’s treatment of light and texture aligns with contemporary Venetian influences while retaining a distinctive, introspective mood characteristic of his oeuvre.
