Mihai Viteazul la Călugăreni

Grigorescu employs a loose, atmospheric brushwork for the background, allowing the distant soldiers and tents to dissolve into a hazy horizon. In contrast, the foreground figures are defined with sharper detail, and the dust raised by the horses’ hooves is suggested through swift, gestural strokes that convey motion.

Created circa 1850, the painting belongs to Grigorescu’s early period, when he was developing a national romantic style. Its provenance traces through several Romanian private collections before entering a public museum inventory in the early twentieth century.

The scene references the 1595 Battle of Călugăreni, where the Wallachian ruler Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul) confronted Ottoman forces. By depicting this episode, Grigorescu aligns his work with a broader 19th‑century interest in national history and heroic military narratives.
