About this work

Overview

Created in 1437, the *Adoration of the Kings* is an oil painting by the German artist Hans Multscher. Executed during the early phase of the Northern Renaissance, the work portrays the biblical episode of the Magi presenting gifts to the infant Jesus. It is part of the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

Subject & Meaning

The composition centers on a woman cradling the Christ Child, while an elderly figure kneels beside her offering a book. To the right, three richly attired visitors—identified as the Magi—present a golden container and a small vessel. A monk observes the scene, emphasizing the theme of reverence and the recognition of the newborn savior by both lay and clerical witnesses.

Technique & Style

Multscher employs oil paint to achieve vivid coloration and subtle modeling of forms. The figures are illuminated against a darker interior, creating a modest chiaroscuro effect that gives depth to the wooden room with its thatched roof, simple walls, and a modest window. Gold accents on the garments and gifts enhance the visual hierarchy.

History & Provenance

Trained in the artistic currents of northern France and the Netherlands, Multscher settled in Ulm where he operated a workshop with his brother Heinrich. The altarpiece, originally intended for a local ecclesiastical setting, entered the Berlin Gemäldegalerie collection in the 20th century, where it remains on display.

Context

The painting reflects the diffusion of Northern Renaissance aesthetics into southern Germany, merging detailed naturalism with religious narrative. Multscher’s background in both sculpture and painting informs the solid, three‑dimensional treatment of the figures, while the domestic interior situates the sacred event within a familiar, earthly space.
