Born in Ulm, Multscher trained under influences from northern France and the Low Countries before establishing a workshop with his brother. The painting remained in the Germanic region until it entered the Gemäldegalerie Berlin’s holdings, where it is displayed as part of the museum’s medieval collection.

The work reflects the devotional climate of 15th‑century Germany, where visual retellings of Christ’s Passion were used for contemplation and instruction.
