About this work
Overview
Created in 1437, the *Birth of Christ* altarpiece by Hans Multscher presents a densely populated Nativity scene. Set within a modest wooden stable, the infant Jesus is illuminated at the centre, surrounded by kneeling figures, onlookers in medieval attire, animals, and hovering angels. The composition balances narrative detail with a clear focal point on the newborn Christ.
Subject & Meaning
The work visualises the biblical birth of Jesus, emphasizing the sanctity of the infant through a radiant light that isolates him from the surrounding crowd. The presence of shepherds, angels, and domestic animals underscores the theological theme of divine humility and the universal witness to the incarnation.
Technique & Style
Multscher employs a palette of flat, unmodulated colours and crisp linear outlines, characteristic of early Northern Renaissance painting. While most figures remain stylised, select faces acquire a subtle modelling that suggests three‑dimensionality. The illumination appears to emanate from the infant’s vicinity, creating a rudimentary chiaroscuro effect that highlights the central figure.
History & Provenance
Hans Multscher, a German artist born near 1400 in Reichenhofen, worked primarily in Ulm after studying artistic trends in northern France and the Netherlands. He became a free citizen of Ulm in 1427 and later operated a workshop with his brother Heinrich until his death in 1467. The altarpiece entered the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, where it remains on display.
Context
The painting belongs to the Northern Renaissance, a period when German artists began integrating detailed naturalism with the devotional intensity of earlier Gothic traditions. Multscher’s exposure to French and Netherlandish art informed his synthesis of precise line work and emerging spatial awareness, situating the altarpiece within the transitional currents of early 15th‑century European painting.
