About this work

Overview

The portrait, executed by Scottish artist Henry Raeburn, depicts Hugh Hope, a native of Edinburgh, at the moment preceding his departure for service with the East India Company in India. Rendered on canvas with a storm‑filled sky as backdrop, the composition balances a subdued illumination on Hope’s face with the darker tones of his attire, creating a quiet yet dynamic presence.

Subject & Meaning

Hugh Hope is presented as a poised young civil servant, his gaze directed outward, suggesting anticipation of the journey ahead. The atmospheric sky behind him may allude to the uncertainties of travel and the expansive horizons of the British Empire, while his calm demeanor conveys confidence in his forthcoming role within the Company’s administrative network.

Technique & Style
Raeburn applied paint directly onto the canvas without a preparatory sketch, allowing brushstrokes to remain visible and imparting a sense of immediacy.

Raeburn applied paint directly onto the canvas without a preparatory sketch, allowing brushstrokes to remain visible and imparting a sense of immediacy. The handling of the dark coat exhibits a lively, textured surface reminiscent of impasto, while the overall looseness aligns more closely with the approach of Thomas Lawrence than the polished finish favored by Joshua Reynolds, Raeburn’s English predecessor.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the work hung in the drawing‑room of Pinkie House, the Hope family estate in Scotland, where it remained on display until 1928. Its relocation from the house marks the last recorded change of ownership, after which the painting entered the public domain, preserving its connection to both the artist’s oeuvre and the broader narrative of Scottish portraiture.
