About this work
Overview
Created circa 1750, *Landscapes and Figures: Landscape* is a Qing‑dynasty ink painting by Huang Shen (1687–1772). The work presents a conventional Chinese scenery of towering, craggy peaks, scattered trees, and a water element, with a winding path suggested in the foreground. Its palette is subdued, dominated by muted browns and grays that give the surface an aged, weathered appearance.
Subject & Meaning
The composition follows the traditional literati motif of mountains and water, symbolizing the harmony between humanity and nature. The inclusion of a path hints at a journey or pilgrimage, inviting contemplation of the viewer’s own place within the landscape.
Technique & Style
Huang Shen employs brushwork that balances precise, fine lines with more spontaneous, expressive strokes, reflecting his evolution from the meticulous Ni Zan influence toward a freer, eccentric manner. The ink washes are layered to create depth, while the restrained coloration enhances the atmospheric quality.
History & Provenance
Born in Ninghua, Fujian, Huang Shen was a member of the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics, a group noted for their unconventional approaches. Trained under Shangguan Zhou, he initially adhered to a detailed style before forging his own artistic voice, of which this painting is an example. The work remains within the Qing painting tradition and has been documented in several catalogues of his oeuvre.
Context
During the mid‑18th century, Chinese painting saw a tension between orthodox court aesthetics and the more individualistic expressions of the Yangzhou eccentrics. Huang Shen’s landscape reflects this dialogue, merging classical compositional principles with a personal, less restrained execution.
