About this work
Overview
Created in 1897 by Austrian artist Hugo Charlemont, *Au bei Klosterneuburg* presents a quiet riverside landscape adjacent to the monastery at Klosterneuburg. The composition captures a modest stretch of water flanked by trees and a narrow path, with a solitary figure barely visible in the distance. The work is part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collection.
Subject & Meaning
The painting portrays a tranquil scene of the Danube’s banks near the historic Klosterneuburg monastery, emphasizing the relationship between natural surroundings and human presence. The lone figure and scattered logs suggest everyday activity, while the subdued palette conveys a contemplative atmosphere, inviting viewers to consider the quiet rhythms of rural life.
Technique & Style
Charlemont employs a post‑impressionist approach, using visible, textured brushstrokes to build form and depth. A restrained palette of browns, greens, and muted earth tones creates atmospheric perspective, while contrasts of light and shadow model the trees and water surface. The tactile surface underscores the artist’s interest in materiality and the fleeting qualities of light.
History & Provenance
After its completion in 1897, the canvas entered the holdings of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it remains on display. Charlemont, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, produced the work during a period when Austrian painters were exploring post‑impressionist techniques, situating the piece within the museum’s broader collection of late‑19th‑century Austrian art.
