Aivazovsky employs delicate gradations of muted blues and greys to render the calm sea, allowing the red sail to stand out as a focal accent. His handling of light creates a subtle shimmer on the water’s surface, while soft, diffused clouds lend an ethereal quality, characteristic of his Romantic approach to marine subjects.

Born in Crimea to Armenian parents, Aivazovsky trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg before traveling to Italy in the early 1840s, a period that informed his interest in Mediterranean vistas. After completing this piece, he returned to Russia, where his reputation as a leading marine painter continued to grow.
