About this work

Overview

Created around 1807, this oil landscape portrays a tranquil stretch of the River Thames near Cliveden in Buckinghamshire. The composition balances water, sky, and foliage, with grazing cattle at the riverbank and a small boat tied to the shore, all rendered in a muted palette of browns and greens that convey a calm, early‑morning atmosphere.

Subject & Meaning

The scene captures a familiar riverside locale linked to the popular patriotic song "Rule, Britannia!" and reflects Turner’s habit of navigating the Thames to sketch the English countryside. By focusing on everyday activity—cattle grazing, a modest boat—the work emphasizes the quiet dignity of rural life along a historically resonant waterway.

Technique & Style

Turner employs delicate brushwork that suggests the texture of water and foliage, allowing light to ripple across the river’s surface. Subtle gradations of tone create depth, while the restrained colour scheme highlights atmospheric effects rather than vivid detail, illustrating his early exploration of tonal harmony and the fleeting qualities of natural light.

History & Provenance

Rather than presenting the piece at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Turner exhibited it in his Queen Anne Street studio. The work provoked a sharp reaction from Academy President Benjamin West, who dismissed it as crude. Bequeathed to the National Gallery in 1885, the painting was transferred to Tate Britain in 1912, where it remains in the collection.

Context

Turner’s Thames series emerged during a decade when he frequently rowed the river to capture its changing moods. This particular view aligns with the early Romantic interest in the British landscape, juxtaposing natural serenity with the growing national sentiment embodied by the associated patriotic song.
