About this work

Overview

Jacob van Campen’s c.1650 oil painting, Still Life with Fruit and Flower Garlands, presents a densely arranged composition of fruit, blossoms and foliage spilling from a woven basket. The work is part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection and exemplifies the Dutch still‑life tradition of portraying abundance through meticulous observation of everyday objects.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre of the canvas a light‑brown reed basket, rimmed with a black‑and‑white chevron, overflows with grapes, melons, pomegranates and a variety of flowers. The juxtaposition of ripe produce and delicate blossoms evokes themes of fertility, seasonal bounty and the transience of material wealth that were common in 17th‑century Dutch symbolism.

Technique & Style

Van Campen employs a restrained palette of muted greens, browns and yellows, allowing subtle tonal shifts to model the textures of fruit skins, petal surfaces and the basket’s woven fibers. Fine brushwork renders the glossy sheen of grapes and the velvety depth of pomegranate seeds, while the overall composition balances naturalistic detail with a calm, orderly arrangement.

History & Provenance

Created around the middle of the 17th century, the painting entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings as part of its Dutch Golden Age collection. Though little is recorded about its early ownership, the work has remained a representative example of van Campen’s still‑life output, illustrating his contribution to the period’s domestic genre painting.
