About this work
Overview
Created in the 1660s, this oil on canvas depicts a tranquil marshland framed by trees. The work belongs to the Dutch Golden Age and is presently housed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Subject & Meaning
The composition centers on a still pool covered with water‑lilies and other vegetation, extending from the middle distance toward the viewer. Flanking the water are beech and oak trees whose reflections mirror in the surface. A withered oak stands in the right foreground, beside a fallen beech whose trunk reaches into the water, while three ducks take flight as a distant figure approaches.
Technique & Style
Executed in oil, the painting showcases Ruisdael’s characteristic attention to natural detail and atmospheric perspective. The foliage, once richly green, has faded over time, yet the rendering of light on water and the subtle gradations of tone remain evident, illustrating the artist’s skill in portraying the Dutch landscape.
History & Provenance
The piece was recorded by the art historian Hofstede de Groot in 1911, who noted its dimensions (approximately 29 × 39½ inches) and full signature on the left. It entered the Russian imperial collection under Empress Catherine II and appeared in the Hermitage catalogue of 1901 as entry 1136, having been listed there as early as 1835.
Context
Ruisdael produced several marsh and woodland scenes in the 1660s, employing similar motifs of water, trees, and distant figures. These works contributed to a visual vocabulary that later landscape painters would draw upon, influencing the development of European landscape painting.
