The portrait was painted by Jacques d'Agar, a French artist who originally trained under Jacob Ferdinand Voet. After establishing himself as a court portraitist in France, d'Agar fled religious persecution following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and settled in Denmark in 1682. The canvas now belongs to the Statens Museum for Kunst.

D'Agar’s relocation to Denmark placed him among a circle of foreign artists serving the Danish court, where his French academic training influenced local portraiture. By the time of this painting, he had already been admitted to the French Academy and held the title of painter‑in‑ordinary to the king, experiences that informed his refined approach to rendering aristocratic subjects.
