About this work

Overview

Created circa 1440, this painted portrait shows a man whose identity remains unknown. The sitter is rendered in a close‑up view, his expression sober and his gaze direct. He wears a dark green garment beneath a deep red hat that falls over his shoulders, set against a muted background that emphasizes the contrast of light on his pale skin.

Subject & Meaning

The work presents a solitary figure, likely intended to convey status or personal virtue through its dignified demeanor. The somber expression and restrained palette suggest a focus on the individual's inner character rather than external narrative, a common aim in early Netherlandish portraiture.

Technique & Style

The painting employs a subtle chiaroscuro, with light falling on the face and hat to create gentle modeling against the darker surroundings. Fine brushwork captures the texture of the fabrics, while the limited colour range highlights the red hat as a focal point, reflecting the Northern Renaissance interest in realism and material detail.

History & Provenance

Attributed to Jacques Daret, an early Netherlandish artist active in Tournai, the portrait belongs to the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Daret, a former apprentice in Robert Campin’s workshop, later served the Burgundian court and maintained patronage from the abbot of St. Vaast in Arras. Only four of his painted panels survive, all linked to documented commissions.

Context

The painting emerges from the Northern Renaissance, a period marked by heightened attention to individual likeness and naturalistic detail. Daret’s training alongside contemporaries such as Rogier van der Weyden placed him within a network of artists who advanced portraiture as a means of personal representation within Burgundian cultural circles.
