About this work

Overview

This small oil painting, created around 1438 by Jan van Eyck, is a portrait of a man believed to be Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, an Italian merchant living in Flanders.

Subject & Meaning

The subject is depicted with a pale face and dark beard, wearing a bright red hat and dark green robe. He holds a small, folded object, possibly a letter or cloth. The portrait is thought to be the second of Arnolfini by van Eyck, with similarities to the 1434 Arnolfini Portrait.

Technique & Style

The artist achieved a three-dimensional effect on the subject's face and hands through the use of thin paint layers, creating a glowing color effect. This technique, known as glazing, involves building up multiple layers to achieve depth and luminosity.

History & Provenance

Once considered a self-portrait, the painting is now associated with Arnolfini and linked to van Eyck's 1434 double portrait. It is currently held by the Berlin Gemäldegalerie.
