Leys employs a restrained palette, allowing the vivid blue of the patron’s robe and the bright yellow of the girl’s dress to stand out against the muted stone and street tones. Careful modeling and chiaroscuro create depth, while the detailed rendering of architecture and crowd conveys a realistic atmosphere characteristic of Leys’s transition from Romantic historicism to early Belgian Realism.

Created during Leys’s mature period, the painting reflects his interest in national history and civic ceremonies. After its completion it entered the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, where it remains on view. The work exemplifies Leys’s role in shaping 19th‑century Belgian historical painting and his influence on subsequent realist approaches.
