Damascus. From the journey to Palestine

Executed in an early Russian Impressionist manner, the painting relies on loose brushwork and a luminous palette to convey atmospheric light. Ciągliński employs subtle variations of yellow, white, and blue to model form, while the interplay of color and softened edges creates a sense of depth without precise delineation, characteristic of the movement’s emphasis on fleeting visual impressions.

Created during Ciągliński’s mature period while he was based in St. Petersburg, the canvas entered the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains on display. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s commitment to representing Polish artists who contributed to the broader currents of European modernism.

Ciągliński, a Polish expatriate active under the reigns of Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II, is recognized as one of the pioneers of Russian Impressionism. His travels to the Middle East provided fresh visual material that he integrated into a style informed by French Impressionist techniques, bridging Eastern subject matter with Western artistic developments.
