Jan Ciągliński, a Polish artist who spent much of his career in St. Petersburg under the reigns of Alexander III and Nicholas II, produced this portrait during his mature period. It entered the National Museum’s collection in Warsaw, where it remains on display as part of the institution’s 19th‑century European painting assemblage.

The painting reflects the broader Realist movement’s focus on everyday subjects and truthful representation, diverging from the idealized portraiture of earlier academic styles. Ciągliński’s work aligns with contemporaneous Russian and Polish artists who sought to capture the psychological presence of ordinary individuals through direct observation.
