About this work

Overview

Created in 1510, this oil painting by Jan Gossaert—also known as Jan Mabuse—places the resurrected Christ between the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist. The trio is set within an elaborate architectural niche of gilded arches, their garments rendered in deep hues that contrast with the luminous gold accents of the setting.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure of Christ, shown with a beard and long hair, wears a red mantle over a golden breastplate, echoing the Salvator Mundi iconography. To his left, Mary is depicted in a dark dress with clasped hands, while John the Baptist appears on the right in a sombre tunic, together forming a traditional holy family grouping that emphasizes intercession and devotion.

Technique & Style

Gossaert employs the meticulous detail characteristic of the Northern Renaissance, using fine brushwork to render intricate carvings on the frame and delicate patterns on the clothing. The composition blends Italianate spatial arrangement—acquired during his 1508‑09 Italian sojourn—with the rich texture and luminous colour palette typical of his Burgundian training.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the work entered various private collections before becoming part of the Museo del Prado’s holdings. Its presence in the Prado reflects the museum’s broader acquisition of Northern Renaissance pieces that illustrate the cross‑cultural exchange between Italy and the Low Countries in the early sixteenth century.

Context

Gossaert was a leading figure of the Romanist movement, a group of Netherlandish artists who incorporated Italian Renaissance motifs after traveling to Rome. This painting exemplifies that synthesis, merging the northern attention to surface detail with the Italian emphasis on classical architecture and balanced composition.
