General Józef Chłopicki and Skrzynecki among soldiers

Executed in oil, the work displays a realistic handling of light and colour that models forms and surfaces with subtle chiaroscuro. The artist’s attention to detail renders the textures of uniforms, metal, and animal fur, while the atmospheric sky and distant trees provide depth.

After its completion, the painting entered the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains on display. Suchodolski’s membership in the Imperial Academy of Arts and his military background informed the work’s authentic portrayal of 19th‑century Polish forces.

Created during a period of heightened Polish national sentiment, the painting reflects the artist’s interest in documenting contemporary military leaders such as General Józef Chłopicki and General Skrzynecki, both prominent figures in the November Uprising of 1830‑31.
