About this work
Overview
Created in 1984, this untitled work by Jedd Garet consists of two adjoining canvases painted with synthetic polymer pigments. The composition is split vertically, each side presenting a distinct color field and abstract form that together generate a dialogue across the divide.
Subject & Meaning
On the left, a muted yellow‑gray ground supports a brown, tree‑like silhouette that suggests organic growth, while the right side offers a white‑purple field behind a sharply rendered geometric shape. The juxtaposition of natural and constructed motifs invites viewers to consider the tension between instinctual and rational structures.
Technique & Style
Garet employed acrylic‑based polymer paint, allowing for flat, saturated color areas and crisp edges. The brushwork is minimal, emphasizing shape over texture, and the division of the canvas reinforces a dualistic visual strategy characteristic of his abstract investigations in the 1980s.
History & Provenance
The painting entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art shortly after its completion, where it remains on display. Its acquisition reflects MoMA’s interest in documenting the experimental abstract practices of American painters during that decade.
