Jerichau employs oil paint to build a tactile surface, allowing the palm’s bark and leaves to appear almost sculptural. The brushwork moves away from his earlier neoclassical training, favoring a more naturalistic handling of light and atmosphere. Subtle gradations of blue and warm earth tones convey depth, while the textured application gives the scene a modest three‑dimensional quality.

Although primarily known as a sculptor, Jens Adolf Jerichau turned to painting later in his career, producing this piece during a period of stylistic transition. The painting entered the collection of Denmark’s national gallery, the Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains part of the institution’s representation of early 20th‑century Danish art.

Jerichau’s artistic development was shaped by an early apprenticeship with Bertel Thorvaldsen, after which he pursued a more dynamic, realistic approach. His later roles as professor and director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts positioned him as an influential educator, guiding successive generations while his own work reflected a shift toward contemporary landscape painting.
