About this work

Overview

This early American bookplate, executed around 1796 by engraver Joseph Callender, presents a personalized coat of arms accompanied by the name of Winthrop Sargent. The print is part of the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art and exemplifies the modest yet formal decorative devices used in private libraries of the late eighteenth century.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre of the design lies a shield patterned in a checkerboard motif, flanked by three flowing curves.

At the centre of the design lies a shield patterned in a checkerboard motif, flanked by three flowing curves. A bird in flight hovers above, while a surrounding wreath of foliage frames the composition. A scroll bears the Latin motto “Neque honoris quaerere, neque honorem despici,” translating as “Neither to seek dishonor nor to despise honor,” reflecting the values the Sargent family wished to convey.

Technique & Style

Callender employed fine line engraving to render the intricate heraldic elements, achieving delicate contrast between the dense ornamental borders and the lighter lettering of the name below. The use of cursive script for “Winthrop Sargent” and the balanced arrangement of botanical motifs are characteristic of late‑Georgian bookplate aesthetics, where clarity of identification coexists with ornamental flourish.

History & Provenance

The plate was likely commissioned by Winthrop Sargent, a prominent figure in early American society, to mark his personal library volumes. After passing through private hands, the object entered the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection, where it is displayed among other early American prints that illustrate the period’s graphic and heraldic traditions.
