About this work

Overview

Juan Antonio de Frías y Escalante painted *Abraham y los tres ángeles* in 1667. Executed in oil on canvas, the work is part of the Prado Museum’s collection. It belongs to the Spanish Baroque period, reflecting the early Baroque style that had been imported from Italy.

Subject & Meaning

The composition illustrates the biblical hospitality episode at the oaks of Mamre, where three divine messengers visit Abraham. A bearded patriarch sits at a modest table, his hand supporting his chin, while a child rests at his feet. Bread, wine and a small pitcher are placed before them, symbolising the sustenance offered to the guests, who are represented as winged figures observing the scene.

Technique & Style

Frías y Escalante employs a chiaroscuro scheme, contrasting illuminated faces and the bright white tablecloth with deeper shadows in the surrounding space. This handling of light creates a three‑dimensional effect and draws attention to the interaction between the human figures and the angelic visitors. The brushwork is smooth, typical of the early Baroque emphasis on clarity and narrative focus.

History & Provenance

Born in Córdoba in 1633, the artist trained under Francisco Ricci in Madrid and spent his brief career serving the Spanish court. He completed this painting two years before his death in 1669. After remaining in private hands, the work entered the Museo del Prado’s holdings, where it is displayed as part of the museum’s Baroque collection.

Context

The painting reflects the Counter‑Reformation’s interest in biblical scenes that emphasize hospitality and divine presence. By integrating Italian Baroque influences with Spanish sensibilities, Frías y Escalante aligns with the broader Golden Age trend of using religious narratives to convey moral instruction through dramatic visual language.
