About this work
Overview
The portrait, titled Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Pink Dress, is an oil painting on canvas dating from around 1660. It depicts Margaret Theresa, the young daughter of King Philip IV of Spain, and is currently displayed in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
Technique & Style
While traditionally linked to Diego Velázquez, recent scholarship questions his authorship, suggesting the work may be entirely the product of his assistant Juan Bautista del Mazo. The painting shows a refined handling of fabric and light, with delicate rendering of the pink, white, and silver garments and a subtle chiaroscuro that models the infanta’s face.
Subject & Meaning
Margaret Theresa was the most frequently painted royal child in Velázquez’s later years, a figure used in diplomatic exchanges between the Spanish and Austrian courts. The portrait’s formal pose, elaborate dress, and restrained expression convey both her noble status and the political purpose of presenting a polished image of the heir to foreign audiences.
Context
In the final decade of Velázquez’s career, he produced several portraits of the infanta to accompany marriage negotiations and other diplomatic overtures. Comparable works include a blue‑dressed version in Vienna and earlier silver‑ and pink‑dressed portraits from 1652‑53, reflecting the evolving fashion and courtly expectations of the time.
History & Provenance
The painting was long misidentified as a portrait of Infanta Maria Theresa, the earlier daughter of Philip IV who later married Louis XIV. A 19th‑century catalogue corrected this error, and the Prado now attributes the work to Juan Bautista del Mazo, aligning it with other pieces completed after Velázquez’s death.
