Sustermans employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, setting the cardinal against a deep, muted background that intensifies the three‑dimensionality of the figure. The handling of oil paint reveals fine attention to the texture of fabrics and the subtle modeling of flesh, hallmarks of the Flemish Baroque’s emphasis on realism and dramatic lighting.

While serving as the Medici court painter, Sustermans also fulfilled commissions for imperial patrons such as Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. The portrait eventually entered the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where it remains a representative example of the artist’s diplomatic portraiture and the transnational networks of 17th‑century patronage.
