About this work

Overview

Created in 1911, this oil painting by Swedish artist Karl Isakson portrays his contemporary, the Danish painter Karl Schur. Executed during Isakson’s Danish period, the work is part of the Statens Museum for Kunst’s permanent collection and exemplifies the artist’s engagement with Post‑Impressionist ideas.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas presents Schur seated in a dark blue suit, his hand gripping a green hat while a vivid red tie contrasts with his light complexion. The informal pose and direct gaze suggest a personal rapport between the two artists, offering a glimpse into the camaraderie of early‑20th‑century Scandinavian painters.

Technique & Style

Isakson employs a vigorous impasto technique, applying thick layers of pigment that give the surface a palpable texture. The background dissolves into swirling pink, purple, and yellow tones, a compositional choice that disrupts realistic space and underscores the emotional intensity typical of Post‑Impressionism.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the portrait entered the holdings of Denmark’s national gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on display. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s commitment to documenting the development of modern art in Denmark and the broader Nordic region.

Context

At the time of its creation, Isakson was establishing himself as a leading figure in Danish modernism, while Schur was an active participant in the local art scene. Their collaboration through this portrait illustrates the cross‑national exchange that helped shape the emergence of modernist aesthetics in Scandinavia.
