Technique & Style

This albumen print was originally a 'carte de visite' or 'cabinet card', mounted on card with the photographer's name. These formats were popular in the Victorian era, with 'cartes de visite' emerging in the 1860s and 'cabinet cards' following in the late 1870s.

History & Provenance

The photograph is part of a collection assembled by Guy Tristram Little, a collector and solicitor who bequeathed it to the V&A. Little was also executor of Mrs. Gabrielle Enthoven, whose theatrical collection contributed to the V&A's Theatre Collections.
