Bassano employs pronounced chiaroscuro, contrasting a bright, almost heavenly illumination with a shadowy, atmospheric landscape in the distance. Born in Bassano del Grappa in 1557, Leandro was trained by his father, the renowned Jacopo Bassano, and worked alongside his brother Francesco the Younger. After a successful career in Venice, he received a knighthood from the Doge. The painting entered the Statens Museum for Kunst’s holdings in the 20th century, though earlier ownership details remain sparse.

The work reflects the Counter‑Reformation’s emphasis on vivid, accessible religious imagery. By placing the divine announcement within a familiar, pastoral setting, Bassano aligns with contemporary efforts to make sacred narratives relatable to everyday viewers, a trend common among Venetian painters of the late 16th century.
