About this work
Overview
This portrait photograph depicts the actress Connie Gilchrist, captured in the late nineteenth‑century photographic tradition of studio portraiture. The image is an albumen print, a common medium of the era, produced from a glass negative and originally mounted on a stiff card bearing the photographer’s imprint.
Subject & Meaning
Gilchrist, a noted stage performer of the Victorian period, is presented in a pose that reflects both her theatrical identity and the conventions of genteel portraiture. The photograph serves as a visual record of her public persona, bridging the worlds of theatre and the burgeoning culture of collectible portrait cards.
Technique & Style
The work employs the albumen printing process, wherein egg white binds silver nitrate to paper, yielding a glossy surface and fine detail. Initially part of a ‘carte de visite’ or later a ‘cabinet card’, the image would have been affixed to a card of standard dimensions, a format that facilitated mass production and exchange among collectors.
History & Provenance
The photograph originated within a substantial assemblage of cartes de visite and cabinet cards that were later removed from their original card backs and compiled in albums by Guy Tristram Little (d. 1953). Little, a solicitor and avid collector of ephemera, bequeathed his collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it now resides.
Context
During the Victorian era, photographic portrait cards became a popular social commodity, first as cartes de visite in the 1850s and later as larger cabinet cards in the 1870s. These formats allowed the public to acquire images of actors, scenic views, and other subjects, contributing to a visual culture of celebrity and tourism.
