About this work
Overview
Created circa 1550 by the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck, this oil painting presents the Roman sea‑god Neptune astride a mythological sea‑horse. Executed in the Mannerist idiom, the work now forms part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection, offering a vivid example of mid‑sixteenth‑century Northern European engagement with classical themes.
Subject & Meaning
Neptune, rendered as a muscular figure clutching a trident‑like club, dominates the composition, his twisted torso suggesting movement and authority. Beneath his foot lies a coiled sea creature, interpreted as a hippocampus, symbolising the god’s command over the ocean and perhaps alluding to triumph over chaotic forces.
Technique & Style
Heemskerck employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, using deep shadows to model the figure’s stone‑like skin and to heighten the sense of three‑dimensionality. The brushwork is vigorous, with thick impasto that gives the flesh a tactile, almost sculptural quality, while the background recedes into darker tones, focusing attention on the central deity.
History & Provenance
Trained under Jan van Scorel and profoundly influenced by his Italian sojourn between 1532 and 1536, Heemskerck incorporated Renaissance compositional ideas into his Northern practice. The painting entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings through later acquisitions, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s representation of Dutch Mannerism.
Context
The work reflects the broader sixteenth‑century fascination with classical mythology among Northern artists, who often merged Italianate ideals with local sensibilities. Heemskerck’s exposure to Italian art during his travels informed his treatment of mythic subjects, positioning Neptune alongside other contemporary depictions that emphasized heroic anatomy and dramatic lighting.
