Simonsen employs oil’s rich texture to render dynamic movement and atmospheric effects. A strong chiaroscuro, illuminated from the left, models figures and horses, creating depth and a sense of three‑dimensional space. The brushwork varies between tight detailing on weapons and looser strokes for clouds and terrain, enhancing the painting’s dramatic vigor.

Created four years after the actual battle, the painting reflects contemporary interest in national military events. It entered the Statens Museum for Kunst’s holdings, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s representation of Danish historical art.

The Battle of Isted was a decisive engagement in the First Schleswig War, a conflict over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Simonsen’s work belongs to a broader 19th‑century tradition of history painting that sought to document and glorify national struggles through vivid visual narrative.
