About this work
Overview
Therapia Bosphorus is a mid‑nineteenth‑century watercolour by British artist Montagu Frederick O’Reilly. Executed in 1854, the piece depicts a tranquil lakeside settlement, its shoreline punctuated by cypress trees and a twin‑towered mosque. The composition balances a foreground path with strolling figures against a distant horizon of softly rendered hills and a cloud‑filled sky.
Subject & Meaning
The scene presents a small village by water, suggesting a moment of everyday life in a Mediterranean setting. Three figures—a child accompanied by two adults in flowing robes—traverse a dirt track, implying a leisurely journey or pilgrimage. The juxtaposition of human activity with the serene natural environment conveys a harmonious coexistence between culture and landscape.
Technique & Style
O’Reilly employs fluid, loosely applied brushstrokes that capture the play of light on water and the atmospheric haze of distant hills.
O’Reilly employs fluid, loosely applied brushstrokes that capture the play of light on water and the atmospheric haze of distant hills. A restrained palette of muted tones is enlivened by accents of red roof tiles and verdant foliage. The overall effect is dreamlike, echoing qualities later associated with Impressionist and Realist approaches while retaining a distinct nineteenth‑century sensibility.
History & Provenance
The watercolour entered the public record when it was acquired from the antiquarian bookseller J. Maggs in June 1967 for a modest sum of three pounds, as noted by cataloguer Rodney Searight. Since that purchase, the work has been retained within the collection that houses it, providing insight into O’Reilly’s oeuvre and the period’s visual culture.
