About this work

Overview

Created in 1594 by the Venetian painter Palma il Giovane, *Beweinung Christi* is a late‑Mannerist work that portrays the sorrow surrounding the dead Christ. The canvas is part of the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings, representing the artist’s mature period when he was a leading figure in Venice’s artistic scene.

Subject & Meaning

The composition centers on a lifeless, pallid figure of Christ reclining on a rock, his face illuminated against a deep, shadowy backdrop. Flanking him are three mourners: a grieving woman on the left, another woman clasping his hand on the right, and a man leaning forward behind the body, each embodying personal loss and collective lament.

Technique & Style

Palma employs dramatic chiaroscuro, allowing a focused beam of light to model Christ’s face and shoulders while the surrounding space recedes into darkness. The stark contrast and elongated forms reflect the Mannerist tendency toward heightened emotion and artificial elegance, echoing the legacy of Tintoretto’s dynamic compositions.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Bavarian State, where it eventually found a permanent home in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek. Its presence there underscores the museum’s commitment to representing the breadth of Venetian art beyond the High Renaissance.
