Holy Family with St. John and Mary Magdalene

The work presents the Virgin with the Christ Child, flanked by the young John the Baptist, a traditional companion in Nativity and Baptism narratives, and a female saint traditionally linked to penitence. Their proximity suggests themes of familial devotion, prophetic continuity, and the juxtaposition of innocence with repentance, inviting contemplation of the intertwined destinies of these biblical characters.

Executed in oil on wood, the painting showcases Palma Vecchio’s soft modeling of flesh and luminous colour palette typical of the Venetian school. The figures are rendered with gentle chiaroscuro, while the drapery displays a delicate handling of folds. The balanced arrangement and calm expressions reflect the artist’s synthesis of Renaissance naturalism and devotional intimacy.

The canvas entered the collection of Archduke Leopold William of Austria in Brussels in 1653, remaining there until 1662 when it was transferred to the Imperial Galleries in Vienna. In 1793 it was exchanged for another work and entered the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it is catalogued under inventory number 950.
