About this work
Overview
Parmigianino’s early oil painting, titled *Baptism of Christ*, dates from around 1519 and is the artist’s oldest extant work, created when he was about sixteen years old. Executed on a wooden panel, the piece now belongs to the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
Subject & Meaning
The composition depicts the biblical moment of John the Baptist immersing Christ in water. John, clothed in a red drape, pours water from a bowl over a half‑naked Christ, whose head is encircled by a halo. Above them, three diminutive winged figures hover, while a bird perches near a staff crowned with a cross, suggesting a celestial witness to the sacrament.
Technique & Style
Rendered in oil, the work employs a clear chiaroscuro scheme: illuminated zones highlight the figures and the reflective water, whereas surrounding areas recede into shadow, creating depth on the shallow riverbank. The painter’s handling of light and the delicate modeling of forms reveal a precocious grasp of Renaissance visual language.
History & Provenance
According to Giorgio Vasari’s *Lives of the Artists*, the painting was a youthful invention of Parmigianino that astonished viewers with its refined execution. It was originally installed in the Nunziata church in Parma, overseen by the Frati de’ Zoccoli, before eventually entering the Berlin museum’s holdings.
Context
Created during the High Renaissance, the work reflects contemporary interest in biblical narratives rendered with naturalistic detail. Parmigianino’s early exposure to the artistic milieu of Parma, combined with his own prodigious talent, allowed him to engage with established iconography while experimenting with light and composition.
