After being acquired in 1923 for 1,200 pounds sterling, the painting was displayed at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands for decades. Its whereabouts were unknown from around 1923 until 1964, when it was purchased at auction by Hammer Galleries. The Norton Simon Museum acquired it in 1976.
