About this work

Overview

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s oil painting titled The Suicide of Saul was executed in 1562 and now belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Rendered on a modestly sized wooden panel, the work measures roughly 34 by 55 centimetres, presenting a compact yet densely populated scene.

Subject & Meaning

The composition depicts the biblical episode of King Saul’s self‑inflicted death amid a chaotic battlefield. Bruegel places the fallen monarch among a tangle of combatants, wounded soldiers, and a burning settlement, emphasizing the tragic culmination of war and the personal despair of the defeated ruler.

Technique & Style

In this early effort Bruegel attempts to fuse landscape and figure painting. The foreground is crowded with minute details—ploughing peasants, a lone horseman on a rock, a sniffing dog—while a hazy, atmospheric background recedes through a softened haze. The use of chiaroscuro heightens drama, and a central rock outcrop reflects a lingering Mannerist influence.

History & Provenance

The panel was originally trimmed, losing about one centimetre at the bottom and four centimetres at the top. During the late 18th century, missing sections were replaced with new fruitwood, a restoration still visible in the paint surface. The work entered the Viennese imperial collection, where it remains on display.

Context

The painting marks the first known visual treatment of Saul’s suicide in oil, although the narrative had appeared earlier in manuscript illumination. It anticipates Bruegel’s later, more mature landscapes, such as The Magpie on the Gallows (1568), where the integration of foreground and background becomes more seamless.
