About this work

Overview

Pieter de Hooch’s oil on canvas, measuring roughly 61 × 47 cm, depicts a quiet courtyard scene behind a modest Dutch house. Sunlight bathes the figures and architecture, emphasizing the warm tones of the red roof, brick walls and white pilasters. The composition balances interior and exterior spaces, inviting the viewer into a moment of everyday domestic life.

Subject & Meaning

A gentleman in a red jacket and a lady in a yellow skirt sit at a small table; she squeezes a lemon into a wine glass while he watches with a pipe in hand. An older woman approaches with a beer, and a servant, perched on a tub, scrubs a brass pot. The arrangement suggests a leisurely afternoon of social interaction and domestic chores.

Technique & Style

De Hooch employs his characteristic handling of light, allowing the bright afternoon sun to create subtle contrasts of shade and illumination. The rendering of textures—brick, wood, fabric—demonstrates meticulous brushwork, while the perspective recedes through the courtyard’s low wall and hedges, producing a convincing sense of depth.

History & Provenance

Documented by Hofstede de Groot in 1910, the work bears the signature “P D HOOG” on the left bank. It entered the O’Niel collection in 1832, passed to the Van der Hoop collection in Amsterdam by 1842, and was later loaned to the Rijksmuseum, where it remains part of the museum’s permanent holdings.

Context

Created between 1663 and 1665, the painting belongs to the Dutch Golden Age, a period marked by detailed genre scenes of middle‑class life. De Hooch’s focus on domestic interiors and courtyards reflects contemporary interests in order, comfort, and the moral virtues of everyday activities.
