Employing a pronounced chiaroscuro, the painter contrasts deep blackness with pockets of warm light to suggest depth and three‑dimensionality. Architectural elements are rendered with precise linear perspective, while the subtle gradations of tone model stone surfaces and figures, creating a realistic sense of space that guides the viewer’s eye toward the illuminated doorway.

The work was produced by Pieter Neefs the Elder, a Flemish specialist in church interiors active in Antwerp. It entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it remains on display, having been acquired through the museum’s early 20th‑century collection development program.

Neefs’s nocturnal cathedral scene reflects the influence of Dutch architectural painters Hendrik van Steenwijck the Elder and Younger, who pioneered detailed interior views. At the same time, the painting contributes to the broader Flemish tradition of depicting sacred architecture, illustrating both the artist’s personal style and the period’s fascination with light effects in ecclesiastical settings.
