Overview

Created around 1505–06, the Madonna of the Goldfinch is an oil painting on wood by the Florentine master Raphael. The work measures roughly 84 by 55 centimeters and is part of the Uffizi Gallery’s collection in Florence. After a decade‑long conservation effort, the original returned to public view in 2008, replacing a historic replica that had been displayed during the treatment.

Subject & Meaning

The composition presents the Virgin Mary seated with the infant Christ and the young Saint John the Baptist. The three figures are arranged in a tranquil, intimate grouping, their gazes and gestures suggesting a gentle narrative of familial affection and the future roles of the children within Christian theology.

Technique & Style

Raphael employs a smooth, luminous oil medium on a wooden panel, achieving a soft modeling of flesh and drapery. The delicate handling of light creates a subtle chiaroscuro that enhances the serene atmosphere, while the balanced arrangement reflects the harmonious ideals of High Renaissance art.

History & Provenance

Originally commissioned for a private Florentine devotion, the painting entered the Medici collection before becoming part of the Uffizi’s holdings. From 1998 to 2008 it underwent extensive restoration, during which conservators repaired cracks, removed discolored varnish, and stabilized the panel, allowing the work to be exhibited again in its original form.
