About this work
Overview
This 17th‑century replica of Rembrandt’s *Night Watch* captures the original, wider composition before the work was reduced in size. The copy demonstrates that the painting once extended further to the left, encompassing additional figures now absent from the surviving original.
Subject & Meaning
The scene depicts a militia company of men in dark attire, some bearing firearms, others distinguished by bright sashes and flags, with a luminous figure in a golden dress positioned near the centre, highlighting the group’s hierarchy and civic pride.
Technique & Style
The copy reflects Rembrandt’s characteristic use of impasto, applying thick layers of pigment to model light and shadow, thereby giving the figures a sculptural presence and emphasizing the dramatic contrast between illuminated and shadowed areas.
History & Provenance
When the original was transferred from the Kloveniersdoelen hall to the Amsterdam Town Hall in 1715, it was trimmed on three sides—most notably on the left—to fit between two doors. The removed canvas strips were not saved, making this copy a valuable record of the painting’s initial dimensions.
