About this work

Overview

The canvas records a 1642 militia portrait from Amsterdam’s Fourth District, depicting the officers and rank‑and‑file of the civic guard under Captain Jan Claesz van Vlooswijck and Lieutenant Gerrit Hudde. Central figures sit at a long table, flanked by a flag‑bearer, while the surrounding guards stand with their weapons, suggesting a communal gathering perhaps in front of the brewery known as De Zwaan.

Subject & Meaning

The work presents the hierarchical structure of the schutterij: the captain and lieutenant occupy the seated central positions, emphasizing their command, while the flag‑bearer stands between them as a visual link. The other members, named in the inscription, are shown with pikes, halberds, lances or muskets, underscoring their role as citizen‑soldiers responsible for urban security.

Technique & Style

Executed in the Dutch group‑portrait tradition, the painting combines meticulous individual likenesses with a unified composition. The figures wear black coats and white collars, rendered with fine brushwork that captures textures of fabric and metal. Light falls evenly across the tableau, allowing each face to be rendered sharply, a hallmark of the period’s civic commissions.

History & Provenance

Commissioned by the members of the Fourth District’s militia, the portrait was likely displayed in the Kloveniersdoelen, the guard’s headquarters. The inclusion of each guard’s name indicates that the sitters paid for their representation, a common practice that ensured accurate depiction and reinforced social status within the community.

Context

Schuttersstukken were a prominent genre in the Dutch Golden Age, serving both as records of civic duty and as visual affirmations of collective identity. This particular piece reflects Amsterdam’s thriving urban militia system in the early seventeenth century, when citizen guards played a vital role in maintaining order and defending the city’s commercial interests.

Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy (10 January 1588 – 1653/1656) was a Dutch painter of Flemish origin. Pickenoy was possibly a pupil of Cornelis van der Voort and presumably Bartholomeus van der Helst was his own pupil.
