About this work
Overview
This early 18th‑century mezzotint captures a scene from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as staged at London’s Drury Lane Theatre. It portrays the actor Barton Booth in the role of Brutus opposite John Mills as the spectral Caesar, a moment taken from Act IV, scene iii, when the ghost appears on the night before the Battle of Philippi.
Subject & Meaning
The image visualises the dramatic encounter between Brutus and the ghost of Caesar, emphasizing the moral conflict that drives the tragedy. Booth’s Brutus is already armored, while the ghost, crowned with laurel and holding a torch, illuminates the wounds on his torso, underscoring the haunting reminder of Caesar’s murder.
Technique & Style
Executed in mezzotint, the print relies on subtle gradations of tone to render light and shadow, a method that enhances the theatrical chiaroscuro of the stage scene. The careful rendering of antique Roman dress reflects the period’s fascination with classical antiquity and its influence on early‑18th‑century English costume design.
History & Provenance
Published by the print‑seller Pierce Tempest (1653–1717), the work belongs to a scarce group of pre‑mid‑18th‑century portraits of actors in character. Booth, who assumed the role of Brutus from Thomas Betterton in 1709, performed it for two decades; Mills first appeared as Caesar opposite Booth in 1713 and later swapped the part for Cassius.
Context
At the time, theatrical prints were uncommon, with most such images emerging later through the commercial efforts of artists like William Hogarth. This mezzotint therefore provides a rare visual record of early 18th‑century stage practice and the popularity of Shakespeare’s plays in London’s cultural life.
